Draw Poker Rules
Draw poker is one of poker's main forms. Just like poker, it also has certain rules that have to be observed when playing the game. Aside from the general rules in playing poker, there are several other rules that are applicable to draw poker.
At the start of a usual round of poker, the dealer distributes the cards to each player one after the other. Each player should have five cards face down. This is when the draw begins.
The players bet on their hands. When all bets have been met or every raise has been called, the player to the left of the dealer may draw from the pack. The dealer uses the undealt portion of the cards for the draw. The dealer deals from the top of the pack to replace the cards of the player. Each player may discard one or more cards. A player does not need to draw unless he wants to. If the dealer is also playing, he or she must announce the number of cards that is going to be drawn.
There are instances during draw poker when during the draw irregularities may occur. There is a protocol to follow just when these instance happen.
Wrong number of cards. If a dealer makes a mistake of providing too many or too little cards the player has asked for in a draw, the player must call the attention to the dealer. The player should not have looked at the cards for this to be accepted. The dealer may provide additional cards if the draw is insufficient. Or, if the draw is in excess, the dealer puts back the extra card(s) to the top of the pack. However, if the player has already looked at his cards and the draw is either lacking or in excess, his hand will be considered foul.
Card exposed. If a card is exposed during a draw, the player can still accept the card. However, if the following card is exposed, the card is considered to be dead. The dealer replaces this card along with the discarded cards. The player would have to wait for the dealer to finish dealing with the other players before providing him with another card from the top of the pack.
Draw out of turn. In poker games, the rotation is from the left of the dealer and clockwise. Thus, the first person to draw in draw poker is the person to the dealer's left and then the player to his left. If a player allows the person on his left to go ahead and draw out of his turn, the player should continue playing without drawing or drop from the round. However, if the player already has discarded his cards and allowed the person to his left to draw out of turn, his or her hand is considered to be foul.
Slip of the tongue. Each player at the table should announce how many cards he or she wishes to draw. If the player makes a mistake in announcing the wrong number of cards, he or she is allowed to correct himself. The correction is valid provided the dealer has not yet given the original number of cards he or she requested.
Wrong number of discarded cards. Once a player has already discarded his cards, he cannot retrieve these cards. If the player already received the number of cards he requested from the dealer and yet discarded too many cards, his hand is considered to be foul. Just the same as receiving too many cards and discarding not enough cards causes a hand to be foul.
Most of the rules in draw poker are directly related to the draw. This being the very point of this form of poker. These rules are meant to correct the mistakes that could possibly happen during the game.
